Where to eat in Fuengirola: espetos on the sand, marina dinners and a few local secrets
Less a restaurant ranking, more a selection of experiences: grilled sardines facing the Mediterranean, market-fresh fish, dinner beside the boats and corners of the old town where lunch runs long.

Some cities are discovered on foot. Fuengirola is also discovered by eating.
An espeto with sand still on your feet. A plate of fried fish facing the Mediterranean. Shellfish straight off the boats. Dinner as the lights of the marina come on. Or a hidden table in the centre that you end up recommending whenever someone asks where locals eat.
Food is inseparable from Fuengirola. The town's own tourist board defines it through espetos by the sea, fried fish and the tapas taverns of Plaza de los Chinorros.
That is the Fuengirola we want to share. Not an endless list of restaurants, but a handful of tables worth building a trip around.
01Start with the essential: an espeto by the sea

One thing should happen at least once during a stay in Fuengirola. Sit down at a chiringuito. Look out at the beach. And order an espeto of sardines.
Few things capture the popular cooking of the Costa del Sol so well. The sardines are skewered on a cane and cooked beside the embers, a technique deeply rooted in Málaga's gastronomy. Between May and August the sardine is also at its very best.
There is no need to complicate it. Good fish. Fire. Salt. The Mediterranean. And time.
- Ideal for
- understanding the Costa del Sol in a single dish, with your feet in the sand.
02Los Náufragos: the classic beach chiringuito

For that experience we would choose Chiringuito Los Náufragos, on the Paseo Marítimo Rey de España, a classic Málaga beach shack where fish, sand and embers are the whole point.
The plan should be simple. Espetos. Anchovies. A plate of fish. A salad to share. And let lunch run on.
- MIA tip
- the espeto works best as part of a beach lunch. Its charm lies precisely in not turning it into a sophisticated gastronomic occasion.
03La Mar Salá: the chiringuito, slightly dressed up

For a more contemporary version of the beach experience there is Chiringuito La Mar Salá, right on the promenade, combining the classic espetos and grilled fish with shellfish, rice dishes, bluefin tuna and cocktails.
A good option when you want to spend the whole day around the beach and slide from lunch into a drink without changing scenery.
- Ideal for
- couples, groups of friends or a seafront lunch that finishes far later than planned.
04Los Marinos José: when the produce is the real luxury

Then there are the special meals — the ones we would book before arriving. For one of them we would choose Los Marinos José, in the Carvajal area.
The Michelin Guide considers it one of the great references for seafood cooking in Fuengirola, singling out the quality of its fish and shellfish. Here the approach changes completely: you do not come for an espeto on the beach, you come for the produce.
Fish. Prawns. Langoustines. Clams. Whatever the sea offered that morning. The restaurant works closely with the fish market and intervenes as little as possible when the raw material deserves it. That explains much of its reputation.
- MIA tip
- if you love fish and shellfish, make this one of your first reservations. It deserves budget, time and appetite.
05Dinner at the marina

When the day ends, Fuengirola offers a completely different scene: the Puerto Deportivo. Moored boats, terraces, lights on the water, the promenade a few steps away and those Costa del Sol evenings made for eating outdoors.
For a relaxed dinner by the water we would look at Alma Fuengirola, inside the marina itself — easy to combine with a walk before or after. Here the setting matters almost as much as the menu.
- MIA tip
- arrive before your reservation. Walk around the marina as the sun drops, then sit down. Not everything has to begin at the table.
06El Cenachero: fish beside the fish market

And now one of those places we like to include precisely because it has a completely different personality. Freiduría El Cenachero sits next to the fishing port's lonja.
No grand staging here — and none needed. The argument is far more direct: fish and shellfish in a setting deeply tied to the port.
- Ideal for
- an informal meal, lovers of fried fish and travellers who prefer local flavour to design restaurants.
07Charolais: a great classic of the town centre

But Fuengirola does not live facing the sea alone. You have to walk into its streets. One historic name that belongs in any serious selection is Restaurante Bodega Charolais.
In the heart of the centre and listed by the Michelin Guide, it is known for traditional cooking with a marked Basque influence, with restaurant and tapas side by side.
A completely different proposition to the chiringuito. A good table. Produce. Spanish cooking. Wine. Right for both a quiet lunch and a special dinner.
- MIA tip
- if you are staying several days, alternate: one day of beach and espeto, another of a proper dinner in the centre. The city makes far more sense that way.
08Plaza de los Chinorros: don't choose too soon

Sometimes our recommendation is not a restaurant but an area. Plaza de los Chinorros is one of the liveliest food spots in central Fuengirola, named by the official tourist board as a traditional place for tapas, taverns and restaurants.
Here we would do something different: arrive unhurried, walk around, look at the terraces and choose according to the mood of the night. Among the addresses nearby is Restaurante Casa Colón, practically in the heart of the square.
But the real advice is another: don't be afraid to move on. A drink here. A tapa there. Another table afterwards. Some nights work better that way.
09Fuengirola also looks out at the world
One more interesting detail: Fuengirola is extraordinarily international — the town hall notes residents of more than 150 nationalities, which is reflected in its restaurants.
You will find Italian, Japanese, Indian, Argentinian, Scandinavian, Asian and fusion cooking within a few minutes' walk. But if you are only here for a few days, we would begin with the Mediterranean. There is always time to travel through food; first you need to know where you are.
10What to try in Fuengirola
On a first stay, there are a few things we would look for on the menu. Sardine espeto: the essential one.
Then pescaíto frito: anchovies, calamari, red mullet or whatever is particularly good that day. It is also worth asking for coquinas, prawns and fish cooked over embers.
And if you are having shellfish, always ask before deciding. The best produce restaurants depend more on the market than on a menu written months ago.
11Our perfect food day in Fuengirola
If we had to design it, it would start late. A morning on the beach, without a clock. At lunchtime, espeto and fish facing the Mediterranean. Then coffee. Perhaps a siesta.
In the afternoon we would walk the promenade into the centre. A drink. A stroll around the marina. At night, two options: dinner beside the boats, or heading towards Plaza de los Chinorros and letting the evening decide.
The next day we would book a table at Los Marinos José. Because holidays are also about alternating: the simple and the special, flip-flops and a good table, an espeto eaten with your hands and a glass of wine poured slowly.
12The tables worth booking
In summer, at weekends and during holidays, we would not leave every decision to the last minute — especially for Los Marinos José or a specific time at the most in-demand places.
Chiringuitos also fill up at lunchtime. Book ahead for the two or three meals that really matter to you, and leave the rest open: part of the charm of Fuengirola is finding a place while walking and deciding to stay.
Eating is also a way of getting to know Fuengirola
There is a moment in every trip when you start to recognise the town. You know the way home. Which stretch of promenade you prefer. Where to have coffee. Where that terrace you liked was. And where you want to eat once more before leaving.
That is when the destination stops feeling entirely new.
At MIA Luxury Residences we want our homes to be the starting point for that Fuengirola: beach mornings, espetos, the marina at dusk, hidden tables in the centre, and those dinners that begin with "just a quick bite" and become one of the best memories of the trip.
