There are mornings in Zahara de los Atunes when the best plan begins before the day does: a light bag, the car while the roads are still quiet, and the sand reached at an hour when the Atlantic seems reserved for a few.

Staying in Zahara does not mean choosing a single beach. It means having some of the finest coastal landscapes in Cádiz a few kilometres away: long strands, monumental dunes, beaches sheltered by mountains and small coves you still reach on foot.

Atlanterra, Los Alemanes, El Cañuelo and Bolonia make an extraordinary beach route to discover during a stay here. All of them deserve a visit — but each has its moment.

01Atlanterra: the natural extension of Zahara

We begin barely leaving Zahara. To the south the beach continues into Atlanterra, one of the easiest strands for a full day by the sea without giving up services.

It runs for around 2.9 kilometres, with golden sand and a small dune system separating part of the beach from the villas. Cabo de Plata closes the view, its rocky silhouette hinting at the wilder beaches further along the coast.

It is probably the simplest choice when you feel like going down to the beach without planning the day: long mornings, a swim mid-afternoon, and those last hours when the light shifts and you end up staying longer than intended.

Ideal for
families, full beach days and anyone after comfort a step from Zahara.
MIA tip
if you can choose the hour, come back late in the afternoon — the Costa de la Luz earns its name precisely then.

02Playa de los Alemanes: one of the finest views on the coast

After Atlanterra the landscape changes. Between Cabo de Plata and Punta de Gracia lies Playa de los Alemanes, roughly 1.3 kilometres of sand framed by vegetated dunes, mountains and deep blue Atlantic water. The Camarinal lighthouse stands above one end.

It is spectacular from almost any angle, and especially from the elevated access points. There is no urban character here: the landscape becomes cleaner, wider and far more present.

Ideal for
a quiet morning and the best photographs of the trip.
MIA tip
in July and August it is worth an early start: less movement, kinder temperatures and a feeling hard to repeat once the day is under way.

03El Cañuelo: the reward at the end of the path

If one beach near Zahara gives the phrase “worth waking up early for” its full meaning, it is probably El Cañuelo. It is far smaller — some 470 metres — and surrounded by a wide pine wood. There is no urban access: you walk in from the road that leads to the Camarinal lighthouse.

That small effort changes the experience completely. No promenade waiting behind, no row of buildings: nature, vegetation, sand and sea. Travel light — water, sun protection, something to eat and little else.

From the main cove other small coves lie to the south, harder to reach, with very narrow strips of sand that can disappear at high tide. Our advice is simple: enjoy the main cove and don't turn the search for somewhere even more remote into an unnecessary adventure. Sometimes luxury is knowing where to stop.

Ideal for
nature, a short walk and a more private corner.
MIA tip
go in the morning, unhurried, with comfortable shoes for the path; there are no services beside the towel, and that is exactly the charm.

04Faro de Camarinal: a stop before or after the swim

Not a beach, but a place that belongs on this route. The Camarinal lighthouse crowns Punta de Gracia, between Los Alemanes and El Cañuelo, with a privileged perspective over the landscape that separates them.

If you are heading to El Cañuelo, don't rush: a few minutes here before walking down is one of those small decisions that end up giving you the best photographs of the trip.

Ideal for
a short stop with views between two beaches.

05Bolonia: a beach to see at least once

There are beautiful beaches, and there are places that justify an excursion on their own. Bolonia belongs to the second group. Set within the Parque Natural del Estrecho, it keeps an extraordinarily natural character: pale sand, clear water and one of the most recognisable dune landscapes on the Cádiz coast.

Its great dune rises more than 30 metres. Climbing it changes the perspective entirely: from the top you grasp the real scale of Bolonia, the Atlantic on one side, the vast tongue of sand underfoot and the mountains closing the view.

The final access road is narrow and winding, and the natural setting limits access compared with larger, more developed beaches.

Ideal for
a full day and one of the great landscapes of the Cádiz coast.
MIA tip
give it half a day at least and, in high season, leave Zahara early to catch that sense of immensity.

06Baelo Claudia: beach and Roman city on the same day

Beside Bolonia beach lies Baelo Claudia, the archaeological site of the ancient Roman town that turns a beach day into something quite unlike any other day by the coast.

The union of Bolonia, its dune and the site is one of the singularities of this landscape: columns, basilica, theatre and salting factories a few metres from the sand.

Ideal for
combining a swim, some history and a short mid-morning visit.
MIA tip
check the opening hours before leaving and see the ruins first, while the sun is still gentle.

07Atlanterra, Los Alemanes, El Cañuelo or Bolonia?

It depends on the day you want. For comfort and proximity, stay in Atlanterra. For one of the most beautiful views in the area, choose Los Alemanes.

For nature, a short walk and a more private corner, go to El Cañuelo. And to devote a whole day to one of the great landscapes of Cádiz, drive to Bolonia.

For a stay of several days our advice is not to choose: see them all. Each explains a different part of this coastline.

08The beaches that reward an early start

On holiday there is a small battle between sleeping in and making the most of the morning. In Zahara we would make an exception. At least once.

Set the alarm early, leave as the day begins and find one of these beaches before the crowd. Walking Los Alemanes in near silence, reaching El Cañuelo first thing or seeing Bolonia while great stretches of sand are still empty offers a completely different version of these places.

There will be time afterwards to return to Zahara, eat good almadraba bluefin tuna and recover the lost hours with a siesta. That is part of the trip too.

Our perfect plan from Zahara

If we had to design a perfect morning, we would start early: the road to Atlanterra, on to Los Alemanes and the Camarinal lighthouse, and from there decide whether to walk down to El Cañuelo or leave Bolonia for another day.

Because one of the pleasures of staying in Zahara is exactly that: not having to see everything at once. A different beach each morning, and always the same place to come back to when the day ends.
